As electric vehicles become more popular, tyre-makers are under pressure to reduce the pollution caused by tyres. With the extra weight of EVs linked to their batteries, tyre pollution is becoming a bigger problem. Major producers, including Goodyear, Bridgestone, Michelin and Continental, are trying to fend off competition from cheaper Chinese rivals and develop more durable tyres specifically for EVs. California is expected to be the first authority to demand tyre-makers demonstrate they are seeking an alternative to 6PPD, an antioxidant and antiozonant found in all tyres. The European Union’s upcoming Euro 7 emission regulations will set standards for tyres for the first time. Companies like Enso are developing tyres that emit 35% less than premium EV tyres from major manufacturers. Bridgestone, Goodyear, Michelin, Continental and Pirelli are all pursuing alternatives to 6PPD. If Euro 7 were used to stop sales of the highest-emitting tyres, it would remove a lot of particles from the market. Companies like Enso are also working on recycling deals to make their tyres as sustainable as possible. With the advent of EVs, tyre-makers have the opportunity to make a change and reduce tyre pollution.
