Government Budget Reforms Described as a “Relatively Solid Compromise” by Expert
On Thursday, the Czech government announced a package of austerity measures to reduce the country’s budget deficit. Prime Minister Petr Fiala said that the fat years were over and that the lean years were ahead. The opposition has criticised the austerity measures as brutal.
The package of reforms was born out of the advice of the National Economic Council, a group of independent experts who advise the government on economic issues. The current government is largely a centre-right coalition led by the Civic Democrats.
Prime Minister Fiala said that the time was right to announce such cuts or reforms. He noted that the government had declared from the outset that this was an item on their agenda, and that they had to take the electoral cycle into account. He also said that the reforms were necessary, and that economic experts were united in saying that the country’s government needed to enact some cuts to balance the budget.
When asked about the risks for the government involved in presenting such a plan, Fiala said that the opposition would criticise governmental policies or even the lack of activity, so he wouldn’t say that it’s such a big deal. He also said that he was optimistic about the set-up of the reforms, but less optimistic about their implementation.
Overall, the package of reforms is a result of a very complicated negotiation, and it remains to be seen how Czech society will accept them.
Will Czechia Make the Top Five in Eurovision 2021?
Czechia is set to make a strong showing at Eurovision 2023 with their entry, Vesna – My Sister’s Crown. The song, which features a Ukrainian musician, has been praised for its authenticity and its engagement with a political and social message. Many experts believe that the Czechs have a good chance of finishing in the top 10, and some even think they could beat their best ever position of sixth. Bookies have Sweden as the favourite, but some are suspicious of this favouritism and think that the Czech entry could be the one to stand out among the 26 songs in the Grand Final. We’ll have to wait and see what happens on Saturday night!

Surfers from Czechia to Compete in World Championships for the First Time
This week, Prague’s Štvanice Island was transformed into a mini-California beach as seven Czechs prepared to represent their country for the first time ever at the World Surfing Games. Jana Kašová, Anna Růtová, Paula Kutá, Jakub Michna, Robert Vysloužil, Petr Novotný and David Lenc will be travelling to El Salvador to compete in the planet’s premier surfing event.
The Czechs are all experienced surfers, having spent most of their time abroad chasing the waves. However, when they are in Czechia they still try to do as much as possible, such as practicing surfing in the river or going for a paddle in the still waters.
The origins of surfing in the landlocked country can be traced back to the early 2000s, when the sport was largely introduced by members of various “surfing camps” around the world. In 2020, the Czech Surfing Association was finally recognised by the International Surfing Association (ISA).
The team is accompanied by a young documentarist, Františka Bakošová from Prague’s FAMU film school, who will be capturing the group’s adventures on camera. Those looking to follow the exploits of the Czech surfers at the World Surfing Games can check out the ISA’s website for more details. Alternatively, those looking to eventually break into Czechia’s Olympic surfing team, or just have some fun on a free day would do well to check out Prague’s Vlna Štvanice.
