Bakhmut’s Rising Prospects Offer Ukraine a New Outlook

After months of intense fighting, Ukrainian forces have made small but meaningful gains around the city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine. Russian forces have been carving a path of devastation and death in their bid to surround the city, but Ukrainian forces have managed to pry open the pincers and take back territory north and south of the ruined city. Ukrainian commanders are now on the offensive and the momentum in the longest and bloodiest battle of the war appears to have shifted their way. Ukrainian troops are continuing to move forward, and if they are successful, it could reverse the situation of a few months ago, putting the Russians inside Bakhmut at risk of being surrounded and trapped. It would also provide a major morale boost for Ukraine and a serious blow to Russia. Ukrainian commanders are hoping to build on the lessons learned around Bakhmut when they try to attack in other places along the 600-mile front line.
